Background
Present: Gaara is currently the Fifth Kazekage of Suna, or otherwise known as the Village Hidden in the Sand. He has two older siblings: a brother named Kankuro and a sister named Temari. As the leader of his village, Gaara spends most of his time in his office doing paperwork, assigning missions to the Sand shinobi, attending meetings, and finding ways to strengthen and protect all of Suna. Despite his young age, he is very devoted to his position, and in his spare time, he either stays at home in the company of his siblings, or he trains with Matsuri. He has two good friends from the neighboring village of Konoha, Naruto Uzumaki and Rock Lee.
Past: The first decade of his life was rather difficult, to say the least. Right at birth, his father ordered to have a sand spirit demon named "Shukaku" to be sealed into Gaara, which resulted in the death of his mother, due to a sacrifice requirement for the technique. His father, who was the Fourth Kazekage of Suna at the time, trained Gaara to become the village's ultimate weapon, but when it became apparent that Gaara had trouble controlling his powers, his father tried to have him killed. Each assassination order proved unsuccessful, but one particular attempt shattered Gaara's delicate state of mind. After that point, Gaara became completely withdrawn and showed pleasure only in harming and killing others, not even hesitating to strike out at his own siblings.
A major turning point in his life came when he was defeated by Naruto Uzumaki of Konoha, during a joint invasion of the Leaf by the Sound and Sand Villages. From that battle, Gaara learned that Naruto was strong because of his desire to protect his friends, to fight and care for other people rather than solely for one's own self. Because of Naruto, Gaara was able to change his life rather drastically, deciding to use his powers to aid his comrades and defend the people that were bonded with him. When Suna opened up a ninja academy of their own, he even took on a student and showed a selfless, somewhat caring side that surprised his siblings. His student was soon kidnapped by a group of people from the Takumi Village, and Gaara took off to rescue her without waiting for the back-up allies that Konoha was sending. He defeated the main villain, Seimei, by his own hand, and also showed that he was able to suppress Shukaku from emerging with the strength of his will.
At around or before the age of 15, Gaara became the Fifth Kazekage of Suna, and sometime later, he was abducted by a member of the Akatsuki and taken to their lair. There, he was subjected to a painful three-day extraction process where the sand spirit, Shukaku, was slowly removed from his body. Upon completion, the host would undoubtedly die, and while Naruto and other Leaf shinobi went out on a mission to save Gaara, they were unfortunately too late. However, one of the members in the traveling party sacrificed her life to revive Gaara using a forbidden technique. When Gaara awoke from his suspension in death, he looked at his surroundings with awe, as many villagers had left Suna to come see him. Everyone returned to the Sand Village together, and before Naruto and his companions left, he awkwardly tried to say good-bye to Gaara. With some persuasion from Gaara via his sand manipulation, the two shook hands, symbolizing their friendship.
Unique Characteristics: Gaara has a tattoo of the character "love" on the upper left side of his forehead, and he has also retained some affinity with the sand, being able to control it to an extent.
